    Machines for Economic Empowerment

    On 26 April 2011, three single women and four single women groups of WHR were provided with sewing machine and candle making machine respectively with the support of Birgitte from Denmark. In addition, she also supported Chhahari Services by providing a sewing machine, scissors and a packing machine for the single women who are rehabilitated and provided various skill development trainings over there. The machines were handed over to the single women by Birgitte during her visit with the single women and the single women groups on April 26. During the visit, Birgitte was accompanied by Rojina Shrestha, Project Coordinator; Maki Miyahara, Volunteer at WHR from JICA and Manjila Karki, Volunteer of WHR.

    The single women who received the sewing machines were Saraswoti Nath, Mishra Katuwal and Bimala Chaulagai.
     
    Saraswoti Nath, a resident of Aachham district, is a 33 year old conflict affected single woman. Her husband was killed during the insurgency period in Aachham. At present, Saraswoti has been living in Anamnagar, Kathmandu with her two small children. She was provided tailoring training by WHR and is working in one of her friend's tailoring shop. After receiving the sewing machine, Saraswoti said, "I can now start my own tailoring business and will be an income generating source for me and my children. I am very grateful for this support."
     
    Mishra Katuwal, a resident of Morang district, is a 23 year old single woman who is now living with her son in a rented house at Narayanthan, Kathmandu. Her husband died due to illness. She received the tailoring training and is now assisting one of her friends in the tailoring shop. After receiving the sewing machine, Mishra said that she wishes to open the tailoring shop and start the tailoring business of her own.
     
    Bimala Chaulagai, a resident of Dhankuta district, is a 26 year old single woman. She has been separated from her husband and does not know about his present condition. Bimala has one daughter and at present she is living in a rented house at Balaju. She has received the tailoring training. After getting the sewing machine, she said that she would start her own tailoring business for the better future of her daughter.
     
    The single women groups that were provided candle making machines were from the four VDCs namely Dharmasthali, Kavresthali, Jitapur and Goldhunga. All these groups have received candle making training conducted by WHR.
     
    The single women have expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Birgitte for her effort and the support towards their economic empowerment and helping their dreams come true. WHR would also like to thank her for supporting the single women and our endeavour.
