  • Chhahari Constructed by Eastern Region's Single Women Group

    November 14, 2011

Single women of Sunsari have constructed "Chhahari", in order to provide a safe space for the single women affected by conflict and violence. The building has been constructed in the land provided by the municipality at Dharan-17 Saraswoti Marg. It was formally inaugurated by Chudamadi Sharma, Chief District Officer of Sunsari and Lily Thapa, Founder President of WHR amid a function organized at Dharan on Tuesday, November 13.

It took two years for the single women group of eastern development region to make this dream come true. The Chhahari has been constructed with the objectives of providing legal and psychosocial counselling to conflict affected women; and skill development and income generating trainings for the economic empowerment of the single women. Furthermore, it would also serve the traumatized single women as a rehabilitation centre so that after certain period of time they can again go back to their community along with the accumulation of various services and trainings provided to them.

The building has the capacity of accommodation for 50 people along with the availability of training and seminar hall. The group also intents to run a cafeteria. Further, the group envisions establishing a day care centre for senior citizens and community library in the Chhahari.

The Chhahari is also being constructed at Illam, Jhapa and Saptari.
