The Strategic Approach of WHR

WHR has been a pioneer in addressing single women’s issues and has worked in the area of socio-cultural, economic, legal and political empowerment of single women. WHR envisages changing traditional stereotypes and mindsets, barring widows from participating and accessing resources. It strives to change policies that are discriminatory against widows and give them their rights, realizing that widows are a valuable social capital.

WHR’s strategic plan (2009-2013) focuses on five pillars which are as follows:

Socio-cultural empowerment and movement (Pillar I)
Focuses on socio-cultural aspects of single women and creates awareness both amongst the victims of cultural torture and perpetrators of such torture. The intention is to help build a more tolerant society.

Economic empowerment and mobilization (Pillar II)
Empowerment of single women, groups and networks for their active engagement and participation in income generation and livelihoods capacity enhancement.

Justice, Human Rights and Peace (Pillar III)
Strong advocacy campaign and lobbying for appropriate regulatory framework to address human rights issues, enhance the capacity of single women groups and networks in peace building and transitional justice and develop their confidence and self esteem.

Local Governance (Pillar IV)
Capacity improvement of single women groups and networks to articulate demands, improve their own situation, secure their rights from local bodies and service providers and to transform into self-governing institutions to enhance peace.

Institutional and organizational Development (Pillar V)
Enhancing the capacity of WHR to strengthen and accomplish the mission, goals and objectives as per the policy of WHR with strategic direction.
