for HUMAN RIGHTS SINGLE
WOMEN GROUP
UN SCR 1325 and WHR
The truth is that since the restoration of democracy, the government has pledged that 33% reservation for women should be made in the major decision making bodies, however this in practice has not taken place. Even in the recent high level peace talks between Maoist and the interim government, out of core members not a single woman was on either side of the panel. It is a wonder as to how decisions about half the nation can be made, without even the representation of half of that nation's population.
It has been recognized by those in power however, that the interim constitution should provide social security schemes for the disadvantaged, including the widows (single women) and differently abled persons, as means for compensation. And it should be a fundamental right of such persons. Major law reforms have been the granting of the right to gaining citizenship by mothers name.
United Nations Security Council Resolution (UN SCR) 1325 is not yet well know in the country. It is only of recent that the NGO's and civil society are becoming aware of its existence; however ignorance about it is still information about and implementation of UN SCR 1325 and other international human rights instruments. has produced a handbook/toolkit on women and our role in peace building, with the major focus being on UN SCR 1325, its importance and urgent need for implementation. This handbook will be made available to rural women as well as civil society and policy makers and will be replicated into other local languages as well. The handbook will act as a guide whereby women from all levels can advocate for the execution of UN SCR 1325.
WHR undertook a lobby and media campaign to advocate for UN SCR 1325 since our participation at the Wilton Park Conference, Peace and Security: Implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1325 30 May – 02 June 2006 and have been successful in sensitizing the NGO community in Nepal to an extent.
