Our work

Our work involves the holistic empowerment of single women (widows) and their dependents. It involves viewing the issues of single women in perspective of the individual as well as society. Therefore our work focus mainly on the following aspects:

Social and psychological Empowerment:

  • WHR advocates eliminating the social ostracism of Single women (widows) so as to incorporate them into the social mainstream.
  • WHR rehabilitate and reintegrate single women in the society by working with their families and communities.
  • WHR runs an open forum for Single Women (widows) every month, where they can share their feelings and experiences through discussion.
  • WHR offers counseling services and legal awareness to the abused Single women (widows) and their children.
  • WHR has built up a "network" in various districts and has been able to form Single Women Group in 140 groups in 38 districts of Nepal in order to bring positive changes among single women (widows) ( widows) through Sahayogi Saathi (social mobilizers).

Education:

  • WHR supports the needy children of Single Women (widows) by providing scholarship.
  • WHR provides non-formal education to Single (widows) and their children.

Economic empowerment:

  • WHR runs saving/credit program called 'Aadhar' to assist the needy Single women (widows) to obtain micro credit to start income generating activities.
  • WHR has formed the "Single Women Entrepreneur Group (SWEG)" for Single women (widows) , to promote and find market for the products made by Single women (widows) in Nepal and it conducts various training keeping in view the resources of the districts. Trainings imparted to single women (widows) include candle making, incense making, soap making, cycle repairing, motor-driving, tailoring, pickle making, spice grinding machine etc. WHR focuses on providing non traditional skill training to single women in order to allow them to compete in today's market.

Empowerment for peace:

Publications, seminars and conferences are aimed towards women's participation in the peace movements so that their voices are brought to the fore. This way WHR seeks to promote women from passive beneficiaries to active participants.

How is it funded?

Presently, we have been able to raise funds through charitable donors, Ministries, local NGO's and INGO’s, individuals and donor agencies to support our current activities.
